Iskandar Malaysia is the flagship economic development corridor of southern Johor and one of the cornerstones of the state's prosperity. Launched in 2006 and administered by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), it covers around 2,217 square kilometres spanning Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Pasir Gudang, Kulai and parts of Pontian.
The corridor's purpose is to transform southern Johor into a competitive, sustainable metropolis attracting both domestic and foreign investment. Over the years it has done so on a remarkable scale. From its launch through to the end of 2023, Iskandar Malaysia drew cumulative committed investment of roughly RM413 billion. In 2024 alone it recorded a record RM41.4 billion in committed investment, a figure announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in April 2025. IRDA has set a target of RM636 billion in cumulative investment by 2030.
Iskandar Malaysia anchors much of Johor's industrial, residential and tourism growth. Within its boundaries sits the Port of Tanjung Pelepas, one of the world's busiest container ports, alongside manufacturing hubs, education zones and a rapidly expanding data centre sector that has made Johor a regional leader in digital infrastructure.
The corridor also provides the foundation for the newer Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, signed in January 2025, which layers a cross-border framework on top of Iskandar's existing infrastructure and incentives. Together they reinforce Johor's position as one of Malaysia's most economically dynamic states.
For residents, this investment translates into jobs, infrastructure and rising property values — but also into debates about cost of living, congestion and the balance between rapid development and quality of life. Those debates form part of the backdrop to the 2026 Johor state election, where the state's economic direction is a central theme for every contesting party.
